Tracking Abalone stocks underwater is critical. Recording deployments against Lease area, down to the Abitat level. Assessing existing stock levels requires assessment of mortality and size growth to establishing under water biomass estimates of both shell and meat weight.

OGA is a publicly owned company and places enormous importance on maintain accurate records of what would normally be a really challenging and time consuming process. Typical operational data was collected and maintained in numerous Excel Spreadsheets, both time consuming to collate and risky to maintain as the data requirements grew.

This is where Sharperlight stepped in. Providing on water tablet and mobile phone entry and access to data stored in the cloud. Every aspect of Abalone movement from deployments, reseeds through to when they are harvested. Reports take account of theoretical growth rates and as the data becomes available, tracking against actual results. A sophisticated yet easy to use comprehensive Abalone Management System (AMS).

The OGA software system had to be developed from the ground up. Starting with development of a cloud based database system developed with Sharperlight’s new FOUNDRY application. Foundry enables the installers to prototype system with simplicity and ease. Incremental development is typically difficult and hard to manage, but proved a real strength of Sharperlight during the implementation process. On water Systems include the ability to enter daily dive logs whist at sea, enter predator and environmental conditions, record deployments and harvests at a reef level. Abalone measurements are taken underwater with an electronic caliper devise which capture the mm size of individual abalone. This data is automatically imported into the AMS and used to assist in the calculation of stock Biomass.

OGA has already pushed ahead with two more trial implementations at Esperance and Bremer Bay. The OGA August system was developed to roll out to other sites, providing a great foundation to compare performance of various sites.

OGA continues to rely on Sharperlight to capture data, report activity and deliver statutory reports on a daily basis.

Brad Adam’s, chief Executive Officer and Mark Wall, Dive Operations manager recognised the importance and power of developing a bespoke AMS:

Previously we stored this data in Microsoft Excel. With the massive growth in data it became risky and unmanageable. Our AMS now allows us to store data in a database instead of spread around numerous spreadsheets. The process of uploading this historic data with Sharperlight was really seamless. Data can be entered via tablets or mobile phones, using Microsoft Excel and browser technology. Whilst at sea we can be on line to the data or alternatively capture data offline and write back to the database when in mobile range. It doesn't get much better than that.
